141 - Ida-Virumaa seaside bicycle route

Jõhvi – Kohtla-Järve – Aa beach – Saka – Ontika – Toila – Kotinuka – JõhviIda-Virumaa hides many secrets and adventures waiting to be discovered. The given route is best characterised by two keywords: industrial area and the sea coast. In addition to that, a great bicycle route connects Jõhvi and Kohtla-Järve. As you first arrive at Kohtla-Järve, you will immediately notice a change in the cityscape. In some ways, it is reminiscent of the Soviet era. Can’t stay there too long, though, as the mining museum in Kohtla-Nõmme awaits. This part of Estonia is a great place to get a sense of how the industry “decorates” nature – spoil tips, huge excavators and the earth they dig up, big smoking factories. Once you’ve had enough of that view, ride directly across the Tallinn-Narva (E20) main highway to the beach.
You’ll reach the seaside in a place called Aa. From here to Toila, the route follows the same trail as Route 1. You’ll get to see the manors of Saka and Ontika, the cliffed coastline and the Valaste Waterfall. You might want to take a little stroll through Toila Oru park and then ride back to Jõhvi.
You should start your trip from Jõhvi, Kohtla-Järve or Toila. The route is about 55 km long and less than 10 km of it is covered in gravel roads.
By train, you can get to the route either through the Jõhvi or Kohtla-Nõmme station.
